Under The Helmet

Who are Freedhem riders? We have gone under the helmet of some of our past riders to find out.

Meet Lynnette Provost. Lynnette is a self-proclaimed Cycling and Donut enthusiast. We didn’t bother to ask which of these is her greatest passion because anyone who has encountered Lynnette knows that she is most enthusiastic about being an ambassador for the cycling community. Lynnette is a fixture in the Northern Minnesota cycling scene. One day she can be found acting as a ride leader for the Brainerd Gravel Grinders club rides, the next helping young girls realize their potential through the Little Bellas Mountain Biking program, and the day after that she can be found fulfilling her duties as the Membership director for the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike CREW. Lynnette embodies everything that is great about our cycling community.

1. What is your fondest bike related memory?

In September 2021 I completed my first century during the Chippewa Medicine Wheel ride. It was a perfect fall day with colors at a peak. The scenery and route were stunning and the gravel was mostly hardpack. Then, we were routed down an “adventure path” by one of our local legends and things got even more interesting. The day was full of laughs, great people, a little pain, and some epic music along the way. Hands down….one of my best biking days ever.

2. How or why did you get started in gravel riding?

After mountain biking multiple trail systems for 5-6 years throughout the state, my “roadie” friends suggested we try gravel biking together. I was immediately hooked. Riding in wide open spaces with excessive winds while navigating varying gravel conditions presented new challenges (especially on skinny tires).

3. Tell us about your most memorable experience riding the Freedhem 76?

Some friends and I decided to do our first Freedhem in 2021. While they chose the 76-mile, I registered for the less painful 46. I rode alone and got lost because I was too ignorant to use Ride with GPS and also forgot the cue cards in my car. I eventually saw some other riders going in a different direction and caught up with them. When I came across the finish line, Don Griggs told me I took 3rd in the women’s division. I thought he was joking and started laughing but then he handed me the infamous jar of sand.

4. What advice would you give to someone considering entering a gravel race for the first time?

Just keep moving…. slow your pace when you need to and take advantage of the downhills. Also, female riders should always do some research on the proper saddle fit and chamois setup. If you don’t…you might just be in for a sufferfest.

5. Most important question.

What is your favorite ride snack? Bacon!
