Under the Helmet

Who are Freedhem riders? We’ve gone under the helmet of some of our past riders to find out.

Meet Ben Doom. We consider Ben to be an avid cyclist. Do you agree that 10,000 miles in the saddle so far this year qualifies him as avid? Ben has taken on some of the most grueling challenges cycling has to offer and has taken more than his fair share of podium spots along the way. Ben owns Revolution Cycle & Ski in St. Cloud and is a strong advocate of the sport. We are very appreciative of his support over the years. Sponsors like Ben make this all possible.

1. What is your fondest bike related memory?

Racing the Heck of the North about 8 years ago. I’ve never felt so good on a bike. I finished 1st.

2. How or why did you get started in gravel riding?

It started before “gravel” riding was a thing. In the winter we’d ride our road bikes on the gravel as it provided better traction. Now I like it for the scenery, unexplored roads, and lack of cars.

3. Tell us about your most memorable experience riding the Freedhem 76?

Without a doubt has to be when my handlebars broke on the ATV section and I broke my scapula. Fun times. Ha!

4. What advice would you give to someone considering entering a gravel race for the 1st time?

Don’t stress about it. It’s a ride. Have fun and take it all in. Learn from your first experience and use that for your next events.

5. Most important question. What is your favorite ride snack?

I don’t mind “bike food” (Clif Bars, Gu, etc). But Casey’s Pizza and a Monster can’t be beat.
